    Replacing Salomon Shock Absorbers

Mine crumbled years ago and smelt worse than surströmming.

What can I do to replace them? I've been considering cutting up a pair of old shoes and making a pair of shocks out of those... Ideas/experience?

I have a size 42 boot, if that's relevant to anyone.

        Both hilarious answers, thanks.

At least the picture gives me an idea of how new ones should look if I make them.

Maybe I can finally make good use of the HUGELY thick outsole on the USD Phoenix liner, which doesn't seem to work in any other skate.

that would probably work, it's a little thinner (by like 2-3mm) but would probably serve the purpose just fine.

I wish. I shudder to think of what I'll do if anything happens to these. Your best bet would be to find a pair at a secondhand store and either buy the whole skate or jack the shocks while nobody is looking.

I've actually learned that at some sports stores you can call bullshit on the price of rollerblading gear and they may let you name your price, as long as it isn't something ridiculous. I got a pair of ST-S's last year in almost mint condition for $20.00 when they were asking for $60.00

shops like that don't exist in the UK.
I need the shocks so I can reproduce them

hmm. i should try and make some. it cant be that hard. maybe even some out of urethane? like soft 60a? that might still be too hard. maybe make some with the 60a and then drill holes in it?

im sure theres a way. lol. how about some thick crocs? haha

of course i'd only make in my size cause thats the only boots i got for salos

Yeah, and if there's a noticeable problem I can slip a thin heel pad in to raise it up a bit. All I have to deal with is the little plastic "tab" that keeps the shock in place. I can either:
                            1. Remove it from the boot
                            2. Make a matching hole in the liner

Given that the liners are pretty much brand new, and the boots well used, I'm leaning towards the first option. Will a hammer and chisel do it?

I guess you could use a Sifika heel shock and then glue it to the underside of a fitted, arch supporting insole and put the whole thing under your liner?

I wish Salomon would "do a K2" and just release a simple model of their skate with no team, marketing or whatever. Just stick a few hundred pairs up each year in different colours and just fill this gap in the market.

I just used a pair of Linesmans Pliers and gripped the knob & twisted it right off, then smoothed out the spot with a razor knife.

Also, look into Super Feet Insoles along with a slimmer heel pad. I use the sifika heel pad & blue super feet insoles, which comes out to about the thickness of the salo heel pad.

Dope, will give this a go today! I've got a thick K2 insole that has some good arch support, not quite like super feet, but should do the trick for now. Thanks dudes

Success! I tried with some linesman pliers, but found whatever-these-are-called to give me better grip and more torque.

I use these because they offer the heel padding and an arch support because mh inside of my right foot has fallen.

^seems legit. They look like the old TRS Access/detail/estilo/franky/broskow insoles, which had a really thick heel... The shock absorber was inside the liner instead of outside it.

Can those Jug insoles be bought anywhere?

I came to think of my Xsjado shock absorbers today, the fat rubber ones that sit inside the shell. I have a pair somewhere, as I didn't use them anyway, I just have to find them. Could be cut down to fit well inside the Salo boot, right?

Trimming and getting the thickness right

Added part of an old Sifika insole to get a little bit more height. High-tech duc-tape holds that shit in place

                                                            In the skate

Ended up removing the insole part, it just made shit unstable. First grinderblading session in over a month = stiff legged soul:

I recently got some minty STI-Pro's and when I checked the shock absorbers, they looked perfect, then I checked them after my first session with them, and they were falling apart . Having read a bunch here on substitutes for the pads, I started thinking about making my own, much like the person above did.

I racked my brain trying to think of something that could work, coming up with a couple random ideas around the house. Then I started searching on the Home Depot site, for terms like rubber or foam and just seeing what was there, then I found it!

It was one of those mats that you would use to kneel down on when gardening or something. It is a super dense foam that has give to it, very easy to cut, and after 2 sessions, does not show any signs of wear. The board was 6 bucks and you can make 4 absorbers from it. It is the exact same height as a stock pad (3/4 inch) and you just cut the slope into it.

I was able to remove one of the stock pads without it falling apart, and used that as my template, all cutting was done with a hack saw blade, it cut the foam with ease:

I then made a general slope to kind of match the stock, with the insert that goes between the liner and the boot it is not as necessary to get the angle perfect:

In the skate, it is a pretty decent fit:

Impressions were, they feel great, it took a minute to get used to the height (the stock ones had sunken in a good amount) and to me, I dont think they are too soft. Once I got used to them, I had no problem skating, and they provide great shock absorbing...ness. I actually waited to post this till after I had a few sessions in them, to make sure they were not going to fall apart, and so far so good. Even if they did start to break down, the material is super cheap and these took me about 15 minutes to make. I have even thrown around the idea of using that foam rubbber mat that looks like puzzle pieces, that might be a little stiffer if you wanted to adjust, but only comes in 1/2 inch.

                                                                Comment

                                                                  Comment

                                                                    #34
Nice work! To get a template for mine, I took a piece of paper, cut it to a little bit bigger than the bottom of the shell, then placed it inside the shell and pushed it up against the edges. I then ran a pencil along the edge of the inside of the bottom of the shell, effectively drawing an outline on the paper of the bottom of the shell. I cut this out and used it as my template.

No idea if that made any sense to anyone. I've had a few beers.

Even if you get them, they probably won't be a perfect fit and will need trimming, just like myself and jay_red have done with our respective materials. You'll have a similar workload for a much, much higher price. Use an old pair of shoes (like me), or go the kneeling-workmat way that jay did.

I feel the compelling need to send an email directly to Salo, they might know someone who can find somewhere a file where something is written about somehow how some absorbers were made.... ^^
