yea there was a big deal over it

he was only a kid, like around 16 too.

skated that rail like all the time then one minute he slipped out and landed on his head and got enough brain damage that he passed on.

at his funeral all his friends wore skate clothing instead of dressy shit in respect

          i wish i knew his name it's a shame i don't but i don't really live in that area.

oh and dont forget richard taylor who now has a skatepark named after him. he died.

it's nowhere near impossible to die. i dont regularly wear a helmet either but never will i ever be a faggot and make fun of someone for doing it. making fun of someone for wearing a helmet in any circumstance should get you fired from rollerblading.

yeah, but im sure theres not that many rollerblade deaths or even vegetations of the brain.im not arguing for or against helmets im just stating a opinion.im sure there are more accidents from jay walking where death/brain damage is included then blading/skating/and bmx combined.

that would be because of the amount of people that jay walk compared to extreme sport. I bet out of 100 jay walkers and 100 "extreme sports" people, injuries would greater towards the sports guys

                      his name was josh waggoner

                      http://blog.skatepile.com/our-belove...josh-waggoner/

so now you can't say "i've never heard about anyone who's ever died from brain damage from falling while skating"

i dont wear one at all times. i actually lost mine. but i'll never deny the importance of helmets.

smoking cigarettes causes cancer, i've known at least 4 people that have died from it, but i'll have a cigarette once in a while. i wont ever deny that it causes cancer though, smoking cigarettes will just be one of those dumb things that i try to get away with.

Josh Waggoner was good as hell at skating, and his fatal fall was on a 10- or 12-stair rail that he'd skated dozens or hundreds of times... his local warmup rail, as far as I know.

Cameron Card, Yuri Zupanzic (sp?), Brandon Mateer, and I believe Adam Johnson too, all came very, very, very close to dying from head injuries.... think intensive care, breathing machines, last rites, comas...... fucking scary shit. And there's at least a dozen other people I've heard of but just can't remember their names, who didn't come as close to dying, but lost their sense of smell or had some other equivalent permanent injury.

A friend of mine had a head injury a few months ago, it wasn't skating but it might as well have (he had a seizure while roofing and fell 10-12 feet to his head on a cement floor, could have easily been a gap he was jumping, or falling off a drop rail or something), seeing him in the hospital with his head shaved and wires hooked up all over the place to monitor his brain function.... that shit was terrifying.

And yet, somehow, just like so many other rollerbladers, I still don't wear a helmet except at indoor park in the winter (where they make you), and I obviously know better. My excuse is that I almost never skate anything taller than my knees, and it seems unnecessary, but you never know. It's stupid and I know it and yet I don't change it.

I'm super happy to see that people like Mike Garlinghouse, Brandon Mateer (and now Chynna, locally), and others wear helmets and are totally accepted. To be honest I don't even notice it anymore on them, and neither do most other people it seems, and that alone is a step forward.

Wanted to make a post naming those people, Al beat me to it. Though I'm not sure whether Adam Johnson had a really bad head injury or if it something else was the main issue.

Add Richard Taylor though, he died skating down a hill because his bad knee gave in and he hit his head if I remember correctly. (r.i.p.)

I fell on my head once really hard skating a 1 foot high ledge at the park and had a headache for several days afterwards. Scary experience, nearly always skate with a helmet now.

i skate with a helmet 90% of the time. the 10% is skating a p-rail, although a fall i took a few weeks ago has me thinking, whatever, 100% of the time now. If you dont think it can happen to you just look at those already mentioned in this post. I bet they didnt think it could happen to them! David Sizemore wears a helmet now as a result of what happened to Josh, and so do I. Josh was a really good dude and he was sleeping on my living room floor visiting nashville and enjoying life. A couple weeks later he was dead. It freaked me out and i started wearing one. A month after this decision i did a rail to 8 foot drop. I was doing back unity and my feet got hung up. Fell straight to flat on my head. I hit so hard it knocked me out cold and cracked my helmet. I dont want to think about what would have been if i wasnt wearing one. I dont care how i look wearing one, i just care how i would look with a breathing tube confined to a bed, wheel chair, or worse a caskett.

Anyway, the problem with buying helmets is that you need to to find an IRL shop to try them on. Most shops only carry 1 or 2 brands, but online shops carry many, which doesn't help since you can't put them on your head. Some brands a size M is like another brand's size L, it sucks. I have seen people wear very slim looking helmets though, but I was never able to find out the brand. When I first saw them, I was surprised a helmet could even get that slim.

If I ever start skating more than once every few weeks, I'd probably buy one.

With all due respect, skaters need to anticipate what could happen and be prepared or face the consequences.....either way doesn't change my decision on when and when not to wear a helmet.
