            John Coltrane

Django Reinhardt is awesome. I love Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis as well, of course. Can't forget about the greats.

The only jazz band I really listen to is Medeski, Martin and Wood.

They are a drum, bass and keyboard trio but if you like good guitar playing then get some stuff where they play with John Scofield.

                          Coltrane- a love supreme
                          Miles- kind of blue
                          Dave Brubeck- Time Out
not guitar based, but they are all jazz essentials.

And check out some Thelonious Monk, Wynton Marsalis, and Duke Ellington.

Jazz is great when I'm really stoned, but, honestly, I can't really get in to it at any other point.

I really like Dixieland shit. I picked up this record not too long ago on an impulse called The Preservation Hall Jazz Band with Billy and DeDe Pierce and it fucking BLEW MY MIND. Such an enjoyable record. It's Dixieland, though. You won't impress your friends with "cool jazz" by playing this one if you're insecure about that stuff. (Which a LOT of people are, whether they'd like to admit it or not...)

I also picked up A Love Supreme by Coltrane after I got really in to that Dixieland record and was kind of let down, to be honest. I knew it was going to be a different animal, but I didn't think it would have such little effect on me.

So, in conclusion, good Dixieland is fucking fantastic and "cool jazz" is meh.

Here's a little taste of Billie and DeDe Pierce:

                                                    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwHmmKuVfuk

Also, I don't want to come off sounding like too much of an elitist (Though I know I will...), but jazz sounds so much better on vinyl than any digital format.

I wouldn't say the same about electronic bands or anything, but when it's acoustic, keep it fucking analog.
