    My Demo reel 2015. 5 or 2

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F3l...ature=youtu.be

I've kept it short, after advice on people not watching videos over 30 seconds. I hope this shows I know what I'm doing quickly enough, and well enough. what does be mag thing?

great job dude! Smart keeping it short. wish i had fb so we could chat more because i am doing this more and more. enough to make a demo reel of paid projects, but tbh i aint impressed with the paid i did as much cz clients wanted changes.

You do this on the side right?

i'll probs delete this soon cz it aint finished, was just showing my partner an idea for a logo he wanted animated for his film company, but he may not use that tv at all. gotta animate the text in.

speaking of, great organic typography Greg. Digging it. velocity is a bitch sometimes.

Thanks man, i was drunk when i posted this, so good job me.

Ive been stepping my game up as of late, pretty much only using the graph editor to avoid any generic eases. Really taking into consideration an items velocity as it comes or goes, its impact on the scene. Ive been doing a lot of studying of animating in general, as my job is becoming more of an animator vs video editor. Motion designer seems to be the right title.
and get back on FB to chat, I'm always out to talk after effects, learn something, try to teach something. The car commercial part is my full time job, all of the car stuff went to air some where. The "ABC" dealer name is what we do for test spots to then bring out to sell to clients. I like to use those in my reel, because its how i made it, no revisions from clients or internal to muck up my work.

also, give me the break down for your shot... how did you get the paint effect? Are you painting frame by frame in PS, or are you creating a shape layer line that you then use the turbulent displacement on to create the inky look? Also did the TV wipe on with just a mask path you animated? that you also duped then ad some inky stuff set as a matte to give it a bit of a washed on look then a strait fade? Show a playa yo time line! heres a pre comp from something in my reel, can't see too much, but some idea, more pre comps in it still, but its something. sorry for the hugeness

Ugh dude I can't get fb. I do really want to chat with you tho. You got it right. Drew a path. Made a new layer, added stroke effect, and made a displacement over turblance. No plug ins. It's super simple, plus added the custom film stock I created from scanning film negatives, it gives a real nice effect. If you want I can share the project file.

the tv had a paint looking mask that i just pushed back, but the mask itself also had a displacement effect se to a fractal noise thing i made. i pre-rendered the fractal noise cz that shit takes so long to render. you gotta pre-render useless shit. then i set the paint mask as a luma matte which is key cz it revels.

i was drunk and closed down the program after exporting so i don't have hte original. but it's super easy. i just drew a path, added a stroke. remember i made a precomp of a fractal noise? i animated the fractal noise vertically and had it evolve. the effects that weren't expanded were not edited. then afterwards i just added a glow. you can get some real interesting results with that shit. takes like 10 minutes to dick around to make it.

i am interested in doing some hand key by key pain stuff. i'm reading a book abou disney animation, learning the 12 rules of animation to get better. I did a recent one for a corvette mag, i think you would like it a lot. used a free video copilot plug in for the camera effect which made it the easiest 300$ i ever made cz it took me 30 minutes lolololol. I'll have to PM you the link cz it set to go public yet.

did you use sure target? I used to fuck with that a lot, but its been a while. Post it up when it goes live.

Also, im glad i could guess the technique you used. Its nice to watch stuff and not ask how they did it, but know a few ways they could of right away

Totally! I'm on my phone but I want to send you a link of this dudes reel. I've been trying to wrap my mind around how he animated this text. It's pissing me off but I can kinda see it. Like I downloaded the video, imported the clip into Ae. I did motion tracking on it so I can backwards engineer at least the velocity and spacin the text but I can figure how out he chopped it.

the tv bit where I used 3 layers to make it look glitchy. That was my attempt to figure it out but I missed the mark lol.

ill send you that link. We both need to figure this out lolol.

and yeah sure target, but for the corvette mag. Only problem I have with it is its 16 bit channel and if you're using radial ramps, you get the banding pretty bad

                why do you get banding?

I used a vignetting masking out a black layer. + I used a light effect that effects how the background and other objects interact. There's a ton of shades in the gradient caused by the light, and since the plug was 8 or 16 bit channel only, it really showed that, so I just deleted that plug in cz fuck it. I want a 32 bit color channel.

                    AE has no 32 bit?

                    lol

maybe just make a 32bit exr bw vignette that you multiply over your comp

try scattering your ramps, this helps with the banding. not sure how sure target plays with that since i haven't touched it in so long.

you really need to get "Mister Horse Animation Composer". It is so damn good, even the free version. It is tons of presets for 2d layers/text/3d layers. Like rotates in, slides in, w/e. It will change your work flow. I used it a ton now, hard to imagine manually doing a lot of that stuff anymore. http://misterhorse.tv

No AE has 32, but a plugin i was using for the camera animation was only 8&16 bit compatible. Which is dumb, so i just learned how to animate the null object b etter and ditched the plugin

I could scatter that shit, but it's cool. I saw that, i added it as a favorite, but i don't know how to do most of those smooth keyframes, and something tells me i wouldn't progress if I didn't master them first and create my own presets. otherwise i think my work will just look like everyone elses. tho for the time being client's don't care. i still like to struggle with learning to master the keyframe. everyday at work i study. lol.

Starscream, post something completed you've done!

Greg, make something new today. I wanna see it.

I love those breakdown shots. I recently got cinema 4d. Only 3d experience I had was a brief play around with 3dsMax. It's kinda over whelming translation from a layer based program like ae. Nuke looks good. I read a giant paper breaking down the two and why Nuke is overal better for compositing. We get clients that want shit like that fixed all the time, but they say it off hand like they don't think they should pay extra to remove a wine bottle from a scene. Lolol.

love it starscream. a guy i work with comes from a compositing background, his work is very detailed and labor intensive for not a lot of love.

and jonathong, i aint making dick today lol. i use AE 40 hours a week for work, its hard for me to open it and just do something new or cool for nothing on the weekend. i need a reason to create something. Plus my work is not "art", its car commercials.

Have you fucked with elements yet? For people like starscream it's a windows movie maker compared to his programs.

btw what programs do u fuck with? I know you're the shit at Nuke, but what do you make for the objects? I got cinema 4d and am just dicking around with low poly graph art. Not putting animation in it yet
