It's not bad for a starter camera, but as you learn with it, you'll quickly see that it's limitations will make you want to upgrade.

It's a very lightweight camera (definitely need a stabilizer), quiet, has no internal AF focus motor (so either use AF lenses in Manual, or buy AF-S lenses), the frame rate drops at higher resolution settings with video, you can't use it outside below 32 F, there's no weather sealing so be careful in the rain.

if you could hold out for a D7000, or even better, a Canon 7D, you'd be much happier.

no. don't get a D3100 for video. you can't even change the aperture in liveview. the video quality is shit. if you want good video get a Panasonic GH2, hack it. with the hack this thing does better video than any other DSLR. Canons are good for video too, you can install Magic Lantern on most of them, it adds super useful functions for video.

but if you mainly want to take photos, D3100 is not a bad choice. you can get the D5100 for almost the same money, it has a much better sensor, that means better low light performance, dynamic range.

I was looking for something a could film and take pictures with. Something for someone that's never owned a dslr. Someone is selling one on Craigslist for 300. Was gonna offer them 250. Thought i would check with some experienced guys first. Right now I film my mini edits with my iPhone lol.

which iPhone? sometimes in amateur hands a recent iPhone can deliver better results than a DSLR that is horrible in video i think. the autofocus is useless in video mode, there are also image issues in video mode because it's a DSLR.

300 with lens or body only? how much do you want to spend?

If you have an iPhone 4S or 5, you're probably better off getting an Olloclip 4-in-1 lens: http://www.macworld.com/product/1260...in-1-lens.html

Or, you can go full retard and get an iphone slr mount and a Sigma 15mm f/2.8 diagonal fisheye and another lens or two

its the body and the lens. ive become pretty good with taking pictures with my 4s. my sig was taken with my 4s... and i guess the edits come out ok too. but i was just hoping to up the quality on my animal pictures and on my edits. at the moment i dont want to spend over 500. but honestly, i would like to it in the 300$ range... is that unrealistic?

i actually have an olloclip. i havent filmed anything with the fisheye yet but i have taken a few pictures and they come out kinda cool. the other two attachments are almost useless.

you can take MUCH better photos with a D3100 than with an iPhone. the problem is video. i live in Hungary, and i don't know what you could get for 300 there. if you want better video buy a used Canon 550D. that's the cheapest option for good video in my opinion.
